CERCA: Nitrogen Reuse
Goal: Reuse Nitrogen Each Season
• Reduce Nitrogen demand by eliminating low quality seed proteins.
• Maintain nitrogen in leaves during grain fill for maximal yield​.
• Return N to the soil at the end of each season.
• Reduce fertilizer input by 50% per bushel.

Corn is amazing at making starch but 60% of its protein is low quality.
By reducing grain protein we can use 40% less fertilizer.
We are working on key traits to achieve these goals.
This also sets up a healthier soil so that nitrogen stays on farm; saving farmers' money and the environment.
