Starting the GDPC Browser with the links above requires Java version 1.5 and Java Web Start. Java Web Start is bundled with Java version 1.5. To download Java version 1.5 go to:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Instructions to execute the GDPC Browser:
  • If you already have Java version 1.5 and Java Web Start installed, you only need to click the Launch GDPC Browser link. If your web browser reports that it does not know which program should open .jnlp files, you either do not have Java Web Start installed or the .jnlp extension is not associated with Java Web Start. You can install Java Web Start (bundled with Java version 1.5) by going to the following: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp. To associate the .jnlp extension with Java Web Start, follow the instructions provided by your web browser or operating system. For more detailed instructions about installing Java 2 Runtime Environment 1.5 (including instructions to associate .jnlp files with Netscape) go to the following: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/install.html.

  • The first time you execute the GDPC Browser, several Java jar files will be downloaded to your computer. These are all necessary to execute the GDPC Browser. After the first time, these files will only be downloaded if a newer version exist. NOTE: please understand that this may take several minutes (much longer if you have a slow connection) to download as these jars are approximately 5MB in size.

  • The first time you launch this application, Java Web Start will also ask you whether to allow it unrestricted access to your computer. This is necessary in order for the program to execute. The GDPC Browser needs this access because it can save or export data to your filesystem at your request. It also needs this access because it makes requests via the internet to retrieve data from remote databases. Please click "Start" to execute the program.

  • Java Web Start may give you the option to integrate the "GDPC Browser" with your desktop environment. Click yes to add a shortcut icon to your desktop which will launch the "GDPC Browser."

  • In some instances, the Java Web Start cache needs to be cleared, in order to resolve problems that may cause the program to fail. Please refer to the Java Web Start documentation to perform this task.
